SELKI STATION BUILDING

The Selki station lies on the Hanko-Hyvinkää railway between the stations of Otalampi and Röykkä. The station building is part of a group of buildings including a simple guard house which was home to the station agent, as well as a sauna and a barn.

The station was built at the end of the 1890's according to the standard drawings of Knut Nylander, architect of the State Railways. The other buildings on the site were designed by Bruno F. Granholm and they were built in 1906.

The station building included offices, a waiting room, a ticket office and a post office. In the 1930's the station was enlarged by building an adjacent storehouse. Later on during another renovation the old roof which was decorated with wood carvings was changed into a simple ridge roof.

After passenger traffic on the railway ceased between Karjaa and Hyvinkää in 1983 Selki's station building functioned as a flea market and a warehouse. The station building was rented by an Auvo Ortju from Selki. The Guard house and other buildings were rented until 2001 by a former State Railways' employee Reino Ketola from Riihimäki.

In 2001 the Selki station buildings were purchased by Anja Oravala-Merta and Jukka Merta from Kapiteeli, a property investment company.

The guard house as well as the sauna and barn were in good condition. The station building was in poor condition and ready to be demolished. A part of the roof had collapsed and some of the bearing structures had
decayed. In addition, the village's active youth had stoned the windows. Despite all this the station was still in reparable condition.

The roofs of the guard house, sauna and barn were renewed with assistance from the National Board of Antiquities. The guard house received a traditional clay tile roof and the other buildings a traditional felt covering. The interior of the guard house was also
lightly renovated. Some of the backing paper was renewed and the rooms were painted and wallpapered. The house was also equipped with running water and a sewage system.

The station was renovated by a voluntary work force. The roof and windows were renewed and the walls were painted. Wall paneling was fixed where it was necessary.

The renovation is under way. The station is ready to be painted.

The station is now home to a small design manufacturing company. The guard house and other buildings are used as the family's summer home and in winter they act as the design company?s office.
